{"id":8,"date":"2014-10-07T18:01:10","date_gmt":"2014-10-07T18:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/katerubinastro.wordpress.com\/?page_id=8"},"modified":"2016-10-24T22:12:45","modified_gmt":"2016-10-24T22:12:45","slug":"research","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/krubin.sdsu.edu\/index.php\/research\/","title":{"rendered":"Research"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My research is focused on understanding the flow of gas into and out of galaxies, and the effects of these flows on galaxy evolution.\u00a0 Because stars form out of cool gas, the\u00a0<span class=\"style_1\">inflow<\/span>\u00a0(or accretion) of such gas onto galaxies provides an important source of fuel for further star formation.\u00a0 Once these stars form, however, they are so luminous that their radiation can push away the surrounding gas.\u00a0 This pressure, along with the energy released during the explosive deaths of these stars, may remove much of the cool gas from the galaxy\u2019s star-forming regions, and may push it out into the galaxy\u2019s outskirts (halo), or even beyond the galaxy\u2019s gravitational sphere of influence.\u00a0 This process is termed \u2018<span class=\"style_2\">outflow<\/span>\u2019, and reduces the galaxy\u2019s immediate fuel supply.\u00a0 However, if the gas remains within the galaxy\u2019s halo, it may eventually fall back again toward the stars, providing further fuel, and allowing the whole process to repeat.\u00a0 This sequence of events is called the `<span class=\"style_3\">baryon cycle<\/span>\u2019, and I study gas around distant galaxies in a variety of stages of this cycle. For instance:<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Accretion<\/strong>: on occasion my collaborators and I detect gas infalling onto its host galaxy.
